This lead has me feeling pretty stuck, as I can hear some basic elements of it like the pitch modulation and the heavy distortion, but I'm at a loss as to how to start recreating the patch. It comes in clearly at 1:41. It's the 2 bar synth loop that is descending in pitch and continues through the drop.
Any insights or ideas would be much appreciated!

Excellent! Distortion is so interesting. Sometimes you don't know how a patch's sound is going to differ from distortion-to-distortion until you try it. Good work.

Quick update: I just used Serum to try to recreate it (12 voices on both osc, MG Low 24 Filter cutting off at about 6K) and I was getting really close. What gave it the characteristic sound was when I post processed with Ableton's stock Overdrive, boosting the 1K region with its filter and then an EQ hi passing at 100 hz with a Drum Buss right after for good measure. Thanks again Joe!

Thanks so much as always Joe, you're a legend. I appreciate the level of detail, I'll go ahead and give this a try in Serum and maybe Spire. These techno producers that made the track tend to use a lot of analog gear, so I may even try Ableton's Analog out.

Try this:
Oscillators: Two osc, both saws, with really big unison: As many voices as you can (I went with 12), just enough detune to smear it, and narrow width. Set the second osc down one octave.
Noise: Layer in some white noise. You don't need much. Just to give it some more "wash".
Filter: 24 dB Lowpass. Lower the cutoff just a bit to take off some top edge. Crank the drive if it's available to really saturate and add body. Bit of res to shape the sound.
LFO 1: Descending saw wave, routed to pitch, very slow rate.
LFO 2: Route to amp to create the note pattern. This would require a custom shape, like a narrow pulse width wave, with an extra little pulse at the end.
Distortion: Crank this to give it that dirty edge.
Reverb: Big size, just a little wet.
