Patch Request: Mr. Oizo – Gay Dentists (Lead / Bass)

Gathering Contributions

Hey everyone!

Looking for help recreating that insane, rubbery synth from Mr. Oizo’s “Gay Dentist” — the one that sounds like it’s bending and snarling at the same time 😅.

Seems like it’s some kind of distorted mono synth with pitch modulation and heavy compression / filter movement.

If anyone’s got ideas on the oscillators, filter settings, or distortion chain used, please share!

Think “Bruce Willis Is Dead” meets flatulent robot dentist drill. 🪥💥

If you mean the sound that's hitting on each beat from the start and progresses throughout the first half of the song, I think this is most of it:

  • Osc1: Saw wave, lots of unison(try 8 voices), some detune(maybe ~20%)
  • Osc2: Saw wave, +1 octave, similar amount of unison and detune but maybe a tad less than Osc1, turn Osc level down a little
  • Steep lowpass filter with cutoff to ~75%
  • Multiband compression(I used vital and it's default settings helped the sound)

If you didn't mean that one, I do hear a rubbery elastic band kind of sound on the right side when listening on headphones. That's caked into the original song this one samples but sounds like Mr.Oizo pitched it down a few semitones which changes it's character. It's definitely the same sound as it's sitting in the exact same place in the stereo field in both tracks. The sound itself in the original sounds to me like either a quick guitar slide or possibly a disco tom of sorts. Few tutorials on YT for making disco toms if you wanted to try it, then resample and pitch it down(assuming this is the sound you're after).
