Hi all,
I think FM is the trickiest concept so far to apply to other synths. I'm not sure I really understand how FM is working so need to do some furthe research.
Does anyone have any guidance for how to use FM in Odin synth and/or Surge XT (these are two of several synths I've been trying with the OYO challenges)? For example attached are the patch files showing how I've tried to recreate the OYO #22 'Bass FM' patch in Odin and Surge. They don't sound at all like the patch and the user guides for the synths haven't illuminated much. Any guidance appreciated.

See attached patches for Surge. I've included two ways to do this:
Patch 1: This uses the same technique as Syntorial (Osc 1 is Carrier, Osc 2 is Modulator). But the character's don't quite match as much as I'd like them to. I suspect their using true FM as opposed to what Syntorial and many other FM synths like FM8 use, which is PM.
Patch 2: This sounds pretty spot on. But it uses Surge's FM Oscillator mode which utilizes pitch ratios instead of semitones. Luckily, this patch sets the Modulator one octave higher, which is the 2:1 ratio in Surge.
