FM in Phaseplant

I've been trying to recreate the Primer 2 FM patches in Phaseplant and I'm having trouble getting it to sound the same.

My approach is to use an analog sine as a modulator for the primary (audiable) analog sine oscillator. I've attached the output of the modulator to the pitch of the carrier and then created an envelope to modify the level of the modulator. This "works" but doesn't quite sound the same as in Primer 2. It's more gritty and less smooth, and it's very difficult to get the levels right.

I have two questions:

  1. how much does the amplitude of the modulator in Primer 2 modify the pitch of the carrier? E.g. when FM is at max are we talking a max increase equivalent of 1 octave? Two octaves?

  2. Am I right in thinking that it modifies the pitch and not the phase? I read that often FM is really implemented as PM in synths.

  3. Any other tips on getting phaseplant to be close in sound to Primer 2 here?
