Best Approach for Learning Sound Design with Syntorial ??

Open

Hey everyone,

I recently started using Syntorial and I am really enjoying the hands-on learning approach. However;;, I want to make sure I’m getting the most out of it.

For those who have completed the course.., what was your strategy: ??

Take notes on each lesson: ??
Try to recreate patches outside of Syntorial: ??
Supplement with additional synths like Serum or Massive: ??

I sometimes struggle with identifying subtle differences in parameters. Any tips for ear training in this area: ?? Also, how long did it take you to feel confident designing your own sounds from scratch: ??

Would love to hear your experiences and any advice you have !!

Thanks !!

With Regards,

I take lots of notes, and go through the summary notes that Joe has added to each lesson. These are invaluable.
And then I just do lots of challenges, to get better at identifying what does what!

And then of course, you need to be making your own patches as much as possible, that is the only way to remember it all.

Something that's been of great help when starting a new patch is this blog post Joe posted back in 2015:
https://www.syntorial.com/tutorials/synth-patch-checklist/

Keeping this checklist in mind, when creating patches has been very very useful!

But the whole confidence thing is a struggle, I must admit, so I just keep at it, and use the ones I'm happy with!

Cheers!

I haven't finished it completely, but I would say probably the best strategy for getting out the most out of it is to simply make music by using the techniques you learn.

Use the synth sounds you've learned how to use, experiment with them and just make the type of music you want to make.
